Kampong Glam comes from the word 'kampong' which means settlement or village and 'glam' refers to the particular tree which grew abundantly in that area back in the days. Often, it's referred as Muslim Quarter where it's also used to be the home of the Malay Royalties which the major landmark of this area is marked by the Sultan Mosque. On present days, the area is filled with vibrant shops such as carpet shops, traditional Malay clothing, Malay cuisine, Middle Eastern eateries and it's still regarded as the main center of Muslim activities.
